Although every client’s situation is different and often times very personal, Courtney Petch treats them all with her friendly and understanding demeanor, ability to listen and empathize, and passion for planning and problem solving.

In her tax and estate planning practice, she thrives on the challenge of maneuvering family dynamics and tax law simultaneously to come up with creative solutions that not only meet the needs of her clients but also, reassure them that everything from their businesses to their families have been taken care of.

She works with clients on their unique estate planning by preparing wills, powers of attorney for property and personal care and a variety of trusts. Courtney also assists clients in reorganizing their assets to ensure that they pass as tax efficiently as possible to the intended beneficiaries. Courtney is experienced with dealing with a variety of complicated estate plans that include anything from private corporations and cross-border issues to Henson trusts and difficult beneficiaries.

Administering an estate can be a complicated and difficult process, Courtney provides caring assistance to estate trustees by assisting them with the legal process, suggesting tax efficient ways of dealing with estate assets and advising them of their responsibilities and how to deal with the beneficiaries.

Courtney also provides considerable expertise in advising clients with respect to income tax planning, including reorganizations, transferring wealth from one generation to another, and utilizing trusts. 

Prior to joining CCSB, Courtney articled at a large firm in downtown Toronto and practiced with a sole practitioner. She values the supportive, collaborative and caring environment at CCSB and prides herself on contributing to the exceptional client service that the firm is known for.

Courtney is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Canadian Tax Foundation.

Education

Courtney received her Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from King’s University College at the University of Western Ontario in 2005. In 2009, Courtney graduated with a Juris Doctor from Queen’s University Law School.

She was called to the Bar in 2010.

While at Queen’s, Courtney received the Queen’s Law Students’ Society Spirit Award, an award for the graduating student who has contributed most to the spirit of the law school. In her graduating year, Courtney also led the Queen’s Law Cancer Society which received the Queen’s Law Camaraderie Award and an award from the Canadian Cancer Society for its fundraising efforts.

Acted for clients to plan and implement transactions for succession planning purposes.

Frequently retained by clients to advise and implement estate freezes including the settlement of trusts and the reorganization of family businesses including steps to enable the client and the client’s family to benefit from the capital gains exemption and to defer the “death tax” liability on the value of investment holdings.

We advise clients on all matters relating to estate planning including planning and implementing estate plans, preparing wills, trusts (including alter ego trusts and joint partner trusts) and powers of attorney for personal property and for personal care.

Frequently advises clients on estate planning issues where one or more children reside outside of Canada and where the client or spouse is a citizen of the United States of America.

Frequently advises clients with children or grandchildren with special needs.

Regularly represents clients to plan and implement multi-generational estate planning which achieves tax efficiencies and next-generation Family Law Act protection.
